TORONTO, Feb. 2, 2018 – Commemorating World Cancer Day on Feb. 4, OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre announced a renewed partnership with title sponsor Rexall, encouraging the public to register for the 2018 event.
“We are grateful for this ongoing partnership between Rexall and The Princess Margaret, which will continue to draw thousands of like-minded individuals from across Canada to participate in OneWalk, Sept. 7 to 8,” Michael Burns, CEO and President of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, said.
“Rexall became the title sponsor of OneWalk in 2016 and continues to support the event’s success and long-standing impact. In 2017, Team Rexall raised more than $95,000 for The Princess Margaret, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world. Alongside Rexall, the OneWalk community is preparing for another life-changing journey throughout Toronto this summer, raising funds that allow The Princess Margaret to invest in transformational cancer research programs,” Burns added.
An estimated one in two Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes, and one in four will die from it. As global leaders, The Princess Margaret has the expertise to treat over 200 types of cancers, including the rarest forms of the disease. They have a rich history of research excellence, discovery and innovation. Every day, oncologists at The Princess Margaret combine clinical strength with the research expertise of The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute to deliver breakthrough cancer research, treatments and patient-centred care.
“We are honoured to once again be the title sponsor for this year’s OneWalk because we believe in The Princess Margaret and the innovative treatment and care they provide,” Beth Newlands Campbell, President of Rexall Pharmacy Group Ltd, said.
“Whether it’s one of our patients or one of our own employees, the Rexall family has been touched by cancer. Rexall employees are eager to participate in OneWalk and we invite everyone to join us and walk together to help make a difference for Canadians,” Newlands Campbell added.
OneWalk organizers have also confirmed five route options for the 2018 event. On Sept. 7, participants may choose to walk in the new 15-Kilometre Night Walk throughout downtown Toronto. On Sept. 8, participants may also select to walk the 15-Kilometre Circuit, 25-Kilometre Classic or 40-Kilometre “Marathon.” Walkers hoping to conquer an even bigger challenge can sign up for the new Two-Day, Your Way option, completing both the Night Walk and any one of the additional route distances, for an up to 55-kilometre journey.
Irene Saffran, Pharmacist at Rexall, is participating in her second OneWalk this September, completing the 15-Kilometre Circuit.
“In February 2017, my colleague was diagnosed with incurable but treatable colon cancer. A few weeks later, I reconnected with another fellow pharmacist, where I learned that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and would soon begin treatment. In both of these instances, I felt compelled to make a difference and help my friends in any possible way,” Saffran said.
“My practice at Rexall connects me with many cancer patients undergoing treatment at The Princess Margaret and I am committed to helping them through my work. OneWalk continues to be my personal way of helping my two dear colleagues and countless other Canadians. With OneWalk, hope and optimism are at the forefront of every participant’s mindset. It’s empowering to have the opportunity to support world-leading doctors, scientists and researchers who make life better for those living with cancer. The fundraising and physical challenges that OneWalk provides are nothing compared to what patients experience and for that, I’ll keep on walking,” Saffran added.

3,003 participants walk 15, 25 or 40-kilometres in support of Personalized Cancer Medicine at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TORONTO, September 9, 2017 – The Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer announces 3,003 participants raise $6,078,000 for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre as the event commenced on Saturday. Funds raised through the Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer support Personalized Cancer Medicine at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.
“Nearly one in two Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime and the funds raised through the Rexall OneWalk continue to help Princess Margaret Cancer Centre make transformational advances in Personalized Cancer Medicine for patients here in Toronto, throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the globe,” said Paul Alofs, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
“The 2017 Rexall OneWalk commemorates 15 years of walking to conquer cancer. Since 2003, this outstanding community of walkers, sponsors, donors, crew and volunteers have raised over $168 million for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The Princess Margaret has the largest cancer research and clinical program in Canada and as global leaders in cancer care, our world-leading medical teams treat over 200 types of cancers, including the rarest forms of the disease. We are able to transform standards of care, deliver new treatments and lead the way in Personalized Cancer Medicine because of the funds raised through events like the Rexall OneWalk. Thank you to everyone involved, we are so proud and grateful of the ongoing commitment within our community,” Alofs added.
The 2017 Rexall OneWalk is a 15, 25 or 40-kilometre walk throughout Toronto that brings together communities of survivors and their supporters who spend months fundraising and training in order to participate. The Rexall OneWalk allows participants to choose their distance and to fundraise in support of the type of cancer that matters most to them.
“Since 2003, I have been walking to conquer cancer in this lifetime and I will continue to walk throughout Canada’s most diverse city in honour of my mom, Roma,” said Annette Mincer, 15-time participant from Toronto.
“My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at 60 and underwent treatment at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. This year, my mom turns 84, and still, she’s Team Roma’s Roses’ biggest supporter. I started walking in the event by myself, but over the last decade and a half, the Rexall OneWalk has become a family affair. Without The Princess Margaret, my mom may not be here at the event today, making appearances at Cheer Stations and the Finish Line, smiling, spreading joy and giving back. Thanks to The Princess Margaret, I’ve been given more time with my mom and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Mincer added.
Rexall came on board in 2016 as the event’s title sponsor. Rexall’s support is vital to the success of OneWalk and will enable The Princess Margaret to invest more funds raised into their core cancer research programs.
“We are thrilled to be the title partner of OneWalk to Conquer Cancer, honouring our community’s personal connections to cancer and The Princess Margaret,” said Domenic Pilla, CEO McKesson Canada.
“Team Rexall has worked together to fundraise and train, because we all believe in giving back and raising critical funds for The Princess Margaret. Our staff works with cancer patients, and their families, across the country and we hope more people will walk in 2018, to raise crucial funds for ongoing cancer research and discoveries. Despite losses and challenges we all face, each and every one of us has continued to walk on because walking together to conquer cancer will improve life for patients and their loved ones, everywhere,” Pilla added.
The Rexall OneWalk has announced new route options for the 2018 event. On Friday of the event weekend, participants may choose to walk in the new 15-kilometre Night Walk throughout downtown Toronto.
