THE REXALL ONEWALK TO CONQUER CANCER ANNOUNCES $4.7 MILLION RAISED IN ANNUAL EVENT, COLLECTIVELY RAISING $172 MILLION SINCE INCEPTION

3,200 participants walk to conquer cancer in 16th annual event, supporting the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

TORONTO, September 8, 2018 – The Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer announces $172 million has been raised since the events inception in 2003. Funds raised through the Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer support Personalized Cancer Medicine at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.

This year 3,200 participants raised $4.7 million, walking either the 15 kilometre Night Walk, which took place on Friday evening, or 15, 25 or 40 kilometres through the streets of Toronto on Saturday.

“Nearly one in two Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime and funds raised through the Rexall OneWalk are vital to support the transformational research, world leading clinical enhancements and supportive care programs for cancer patients,” said Michael Burns, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

The Night Walk last night was a great success and an exciting new element to the Walk, which is in its 16th year and has raised a total of $172 million. Thank you to our community of walkers, sponsors, donors, crew and volunteers who continue to believe in The Princess Margaret and show your commitment to help conquer cancer in our lifetime,” added Burns.

The Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer brings together communities of survivors and their supporters who spend months fundraising and training in order to participate. The OneWalk allows participants to choose their distance and to fundraise to support of the type of cancer that matters most to them.

“I lost my sister and best friend to cancer and when I think about them, I am overcome with emotion and I miss them both every day but I keep walking, so others do not have to lose their loved ones. I starting walking 16 years ago to help make a difference and now, I can’t walk away,” said Nancy Lee, a 16-year participant from Toronto.

“I walked 15 kilometres on Friday and I am back on Saturday to walk an additional 40 kilometres, which is nothing compared to those who face cancer. I have personally raised over $150,000 since 2003, to support the incredible work that takes place at The Princess Margaret. I have witnessed breakthroughs that are attributed to the funds raised through the OneWalk and we must all continue to walk and raise the crucial funds to conquer cancer,” added Lee.

Rexall came on board in 2016 as the event’s title sponsor. Rexall’s support is critical to the success of OneWalk and will enable The Princess Margaret to invest more funds raised into their core cancer research programs.

“Rexall is proud to have a team of dedicated walkers who keep up the momentum to conquering cancer and raise funds to help improve the lives of Canadians,” said Beth Newlands Campbell, President of Rexall Pharmacy Group Ltd.

“We believe in giving back to our communities and are committed to support The Princess Margaret and the tremendous work that takes place every day for our loved ones and patients facing the disease.”

New to 2019, participants can choose to walk 15 kilometres at sunset, through the streets of Toronto in the City Nights Walk, or join the 25 kilometre Day Trip, which will take place in a picturesque Ontario nature setting.

The walk continues to evolve and 2019 brings exciting additions in our 17th year. We hope everyone will join the City Nights Walk and Day Trip, offering two days of walking in and out of the city, while supporting our mission to conquer cancer,” said Burns.

The 2019 event will take place September 6th and 7th. To register or for more information visit www.onewalk.ca or call 416-815-9255.

ONEWALK TO CONQUER CANCER BENEFITING PRINCESS MARGARET CANCER CENTRE ANNOUNCES RENEWED PARTNERSHIP WITH REXALL

TORONTO, Feb. 2, 2018 – Commemorating World Cancer Day on Feb. 4, OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre announced a renewed partnership with title sponsor Rexall, encouraging the public to register for the 2018 event.

“We are grateful for this ongoing partnership between Rexall and The Princess Margaret, which will continue to draw thousands of like-minded individuals from across Canada to participate in OneWalk, Sept. 7 to 8,” Michael Burns, CEO and President of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, said.

“Rexall became the title sponsor of OneWalk in 2016 and continues to support the event’s success and long-standing impact. In 2017, Team Rexall raised more than $95,000 for The Princess Margaret, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world. Alongside Rexall, the OneWalk community is preparing for another life-changing journey throughout Toronto this summer, raising funds that allow The Princess Margaret to invest in transformational cancer research programs,” Burns added.

An estimated one in two Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes, and one in four will die from it. As global leaders, The Princess Margaret has the expertise to treat over 200 types of cancers, including the rarest forms of the disease. They have a rich history of research excellence, discovery and innovation. Every day, oncologists at The Princess Margaret combine clinical strength with the research expertise of The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute to deliver breakthrough cancer research, treatments and patient-centred care.

“We are honoured to once again be the title sponsor for this year’s OneWalk because we believe in The Princess Margaret and the innovative treatment and care they provide,” Beth Newlands Campbell, President of Rexall Pharmacy Group Ltd, said.

“Whether it’s one of our patients or one of our own employees, the Rexall family has been touched by cancer. Rexall employees are eager to participate in OneWalk and we invite everyone to join us and walk together to help make a difference for Canadians,” Newlands Campbell added.

OneWalk organizers have also confirmed five route options for the 2018 event. On Sept. 7, participants may choose to walk in the new 15-Kilometre Night Walk throughout downtown Toronto. On Sept. 8, participants may also select to walk the 15-Kilometre Circuit, 25-Kilometre Classic or 40-Kilometre “Marathon.” Walkers hoping to conquer an even bigger challenge can sign up for the new Two-Day, Your Way option, completing both the Night Walk and any one of the additional route distances, for an up to 55-kilometre journey.

Irene Saffran, Pharmacist at Rexall, is participating in her second OneWalk this September, completing the 15-Kilometre Circuit.

“In February 2017, my colleague was diagnosed with incurable but treatable colon cancer. A few weeks later, I reconnected with another fellow pharmacist, where I learned that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and would soon begin treatment. In both of these instances, I felt compelled to make a difference and help my friends in any possible way,” Saffran said.

“My practice at Rexall connects me with many cancer patients undergoing treatment at The Princess Margaret and I am committed to helping them through my work. OneWalk continues to be my personal way of helping my two dear colleagues and countless other Canadians. With OneWalk, hope and optimism are at the forefront of every participant’s mindset. It’s empowering to have the opportunity to support world-leading doctors, scientists and researchers who make life better for those living with cancer. The fundraising and physical challenges that OneWalk provides are nothing compared to what patients experience and for that, I’ll keep on walking,” Saffran added.

Join Burns, Newlands Campbell and Saffran in the 2018 Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and honour 16 years of walking to conquer cancer in our lifetime.
